Styling your bride tribe can be likened to swimming against a spring tide – CHALLENGING! Just when you thought that the tricky part was over (finding your own dream threads), you then have to find a dress that not only complements yours, but also needs to work with your bridesmaids body shapes, their personalities, the wedding theme AND get the all-important seal of approval from your gal pals! Dressing bridesmaids is no mean feat and definitely not a task for the fainthearted.
Traditionally, bridesmaids could predominantly be found shimmying up the aisle wearing long flowing dresses of a set colour and style. This look is a simple, effective and incredibly pretty way of pulling your wedding theme together, but over the past few years, the rules seem to have vanished into thin air and we’ve noticed a significant number of breakaway brides choosing to shun tradition, instead opting to embrace the “no rules” bridesmaid trend and we are obsessing over the results!
The benefits of styling your girls without adhering to tradition are endless. Not only will you get yourself a true one-of-a-kind wedding look, your squad will definitely be grateful that you’ve considered their personalities, style and body shape, plus they’ll most likely get to wear their dress again in the future. So without further ado, here’s our top-ten unconventional bridesmaid looks that we’re living for right now:
When Lucinda and Ben married in Fortingall in Perthshire last year (see above), her maids proved that a gorgeously tailored suit shouldn’t be reserved for the 9am – 5pm! These beautiful blush two pieces were teamed with the bridesmaids choice of footwear and cami and the results were insanely chic and stylish. If you want to attempt this look, be sure to have the suits properly tailored and fitted to your bridesmaids.
Let your bridesmaids sparkle in a beautiful sequin gown! This is one of our favourite bridesmaid trends at the moment and no wonder, not only do they add a touch of refined glamour and fun to the day’s proceedings, they actually complement, rather than overshadow, the main player. Gillian and Chris’ Woodside Warehouse wedding in Glasgow was dominated by two distinct features; Gillian’s embroidered sensation of a Temperley London wedding gown and the most glorious of forest green sequin bridesmaid dresses. They worked perfectly together and the results were epic!
If you’re not overly keen on straying too far from tradition, why not add a touch of embellishment or embroidery to a classic gown? For a subtle look, check out styles where the embroidery falls along the hemline or over the sleeves, or for more impact, choose an all over embellished bodice. The pattern will not only break up the dress and add texture, but the effect is elegant and timeless. When Cara and Steven married at Cottiers in Glasgow, we fell in love with the girls embroidered vintage inspired dresses.
Take Flight in White
While traditionally frowned upon, it seems that wearing white on the wedding day is no longer the reserve of just the bride, and when we saw the results of Kathryn’s bride squad at her and husband Dan’s wedding at Coulston House near Edinburgh, we were wholeheartedly converted! The look is out-of-control chic and despite the whiteout, Kathryn remained Queen with her flower crown and lace detail distinguishing her from her girls.
The mismatched bridesmaid trend is everywhere and no wonder as it really is the perfect way to honour your maid’s individuality whilst simultaneously giving maximum impact. This trend can also be a VERY welcome stress-saver for brides-to-be who are up to their eyes in wedding planning because brides can simply set a criteria to follow i.e. colour palate, length or fabric and then the gals can do all the legwork and find the perfect dress to suit their style. For major mismatched inspiration, check out this photograph from Hannah and Allyn’s Aberdeenshire Barn wedding! Swoon…
Over the past couple of years, separates have been a huge trend for brides and bridesmaids alike and it’s easy to see why. Separates can create a fun, mismatched and eye-catching look whilst simultaneously embracing several other trends. This superhot squad are working the sequin, mismatched and separates trend and the results are epic! Separates are also perfect for those who struggle to find a one piece dress to suit their figure as you can team any length skirt with a simple camisole, t-shirt, crop or lace top to create a one-of-a-kind look. The world is truly your oyster!
Joy Spreading Jumpsuits
Bridesmaid jumpsuits are making huge waves on Pinterest and Instagram at the moment and when we saw Kirsten’s sister rocking this hot pink Zara number at her wedding to Pete at Windmill Barn, we were instantly sold! Kirsten teamed the jumpsuit with an orange belt to tie in with her incredible colour-pop wedding theme and the result was perfection! Jumpsuits come in a plethora of styles so will work well with most body shapes and teamed with a pair of killer heels make for an incredibly stylish, elegant and fun look.
Short wedding gowns and bridesmaid dresses were incredibly popular last summer and we’ve got a feeling they’ll be back with a vengeance this year. These gorgeous dresses not only add a touch of grown-up fun to the proceedings, they’re also subtly sexy, which is always a bonus! When Lydia & Chris married at Fernie Castle last summer, we fell in love with these super cute bridesmaids dresses. Beautifully embellished with a dipped hemline, they’re the perfect balance between flirty and demure and worked beautifully alongside Lydia’s fabulous wedding gown.
In the world of weddings, one of the strongest of-the-moment trends is colour and we’re seeing vibrant splashes everywhere from floral arrangements to colour popping centrepieces. Thankfully bridesmaid dresses have followed suit and we are loving it. While colourful metallics give a regal and luxurious look, colour popping yellows, hot pinks, cobalt blues add a big dollop of fun. This bride squad have not only embraced the gemstone colour trend, they’re also harnessing the mismatched, sequin, embellishment and separates trends and the result is magnificent!
Floral bridesmaid dresses are becoming huge and are set to break the internet as we edge closer to the height of wedding season! Perfect for an outdoor spring or summer wedding, these botanic beauties will add some serious romance to your big day. At Laura and Danny’s beach wedding in East Lothian, these gorgeously whimsical dresses looked picture perfect and the beautiful bouquets and flower crown tied the whole look together. Nailed it ladies!
