Historical Figures in Scottish History
Do you know much about the history of Scotland? Over at Homecoming Ceremonies we have been doing a bit of research on Scottish History and thought we would share it with you all. Scotland is a popular destination to visit because of all the history associated with the country and we’ve researched some notable well-known Scots.
WILLIAM WALLACE
Full Name: William Wallace
Born: Date Unknown, Elderslie
Died: 23rd August 1305, London
Sir William Wallace was a Scottish landowner who became one of the main leaders during the Wars of Scottish Independence. He was a national hero who fought and died to free Scotland from English rule. He was taken to London and branded a traitor to the king and was hanged, drawn and quartered.
BONNIE PRINCE CHARLIE
Full Name: Charles Edward Stewart
Born: 31st December 1720, Rome
Died: 31st January 1788, Rome
Charles is probably best known for being involved in the unsuccessful Jacobite uprising of 1745, in which he started a revolt to restore his family to the throne of the Kingdom of Great Britain, which ended in defeat at the Battle of Culloden. From 1783, ‘Bonnie Prince Charlie’ was ill and was nursed by his daughter until 1788, when he suffered and stroke and died on 31 January, aged 68.
MARY QUEEN OF SCOTS
Full Name: Mary Stuart, Mary I of Scotland
Born: 8th December 1542, Linlithgow Palace
Died: 8th February 1587, Fotheringhay Castle
Mary I of Scotland, was queen of Scotland from 14 December 1542 to 24 July 1567. She was the only surviving child of King James V of Scotland and she was only 6 days old when her father died and she acceded to the throne. Mary’s complicated personal life eventually led to her execution by Elizabeth I.
ROBERT THE BRUCE
Full Name: Robert I
Born: 11th July 1274, Turnberry Castle
Died: 7th June 1329, Cardross, Argyll
Robert the Bruce – the son of Robert de Brus, 6th Lord of Annandale and Marjorie of Carrick – was King of Scots from 1306 until his death in 1329. Robert was known as the greatest Scottish King and he led Scotland during the Wars of Scottish Independence against England.
ROB ROY
Full Name: Robert Roy MacGregor
Born: 7th March 1671, Glengyle Distillery
Died: 28th December 1731
Rob Roy MacGregor was a famous Scottish folk hero and outlaw of the early 18th century, who is sometimes known as the Scottish Robin Hood. He was a noted Highland outlaw whose reputation was exaggerated in Sir Walter Scott’s novel Rob Roy (1818).
