This pandemic has presented unique challenges and changes for bereaved families who are organising funerals for their loved ones during this awful time.
Yes, funerals are still taking place but with some very crucial changes.
Currently, Registration offices are closed to the public. Deaths are being registered remotely and death certificates are being sent electronically to the Funeral Director for the process to start planning a funeral.
The usual funeral venues can still be used but churches or other religious places of worship are obeying the enforced closures.
Mourners can attend funeral ceremonies; however, mourners should be limited to immediate family members only. Those who do attend should follow the Government’s guidelines with regards to social distancing.
The Celebrant will conduct a family visit over the phone or via a video call ensuring they have all the information to compile a meaningful ceremony for the grieving family.
Ceremonies do not have to change; the ceremony will still honour the deceased with the usual elements; a highly personalised eulogy, a piece of memorable music, inspiring poems and/or readings which can be offered by a family member. We know that due to social distancing measures this means that those mourners who attend but whom are not part of the same household should not have physical contact but we do suggest gestures such as a nod of the head or even putting their right hand over their heart.
Live streaming of ceremonies can take place providing the venue has the necessary equipment. Electronic copies of the eulogy can also be offered to those who cannot attend and for those families who wish to do so, a Memorial Service could be held at a later date once Government guidelines allows. We know that many will often want to give to a cause close to them at this time and it is suggested that those who wish to can do so via the chosen charity or organisation.
Each ceremony differs but the celebrant’s main priority is to ensure that the bereaved family is well supported to allow them to say farewells to their loved one in a personal and meaningful way whilst still adhering to the Governments guidelines.
