Meet Alan – Compassion, Care & Connection at the Heart of Every Ceremony
In this Faces of the Foundation feature, we’re proud to introduce Alan, a Humanist Celebrant whose journey is rooted in care, shaped by people, and guided by genuine human connection.
With over 15 years’ experience as a community mental health nurse, Alan brings a rare depth of compassion, understanding and calm presence to every ceremony he leads. From joyful weddings to the most tender of farewells, his approach is grounded, thoughtful, and always centred on the people at the heart of the moment.
Read on to discover Alan’s story…from nursing to Celebrancy, his love of creativity and community, and what inspires the meaningful ceremonies he creates today.
I left school at 17 and began a varied and people-focused working life, gaining experience across industry, IT tutoring, support work, and as a classroom assistant. These early roles helped shape my understanding of communication, learning, and care, eventually leading me into nursing.
For the past 15 years, I have worked as a community mental health nurse, where my compassion, warmth, and ability to bring gentle cheerfulness—when appropriate—have become hallmarks of my practice, particularly through my extensive experience in end-of-life care.
Alongside nursing, I first discovered my interest in Humanist ceremonies while working as a pro-am photographer. Witnessing the joy, intimacy, and individuality of small weddings and baby namings sparked a passion for helping couples and families create ceremonies that truly reflect who they are. In the last three years, I took the opportunity to formalise this calling by completing the SQA accredited UKCAPSA Celebrant & Public Speaking Diploma, and I am now proud to be a member of the Fuze team.

Always drawn to people’s unique styles, I have a particular appreciation for fashion—especially when Dr. Martens are involved. My love for DMs is well known, and I proudly own a pair for every occasion. I believe every ceremony, whether joyful or heartfelt, should be shaped around the wishes, personalities, and stories of those it honours.
Creativity and community are central to my life beyond celebrant work. Each December, I run wreath-making workshops, encouraging people to craft their own decorations and reminding them that we can make our own Christmas—unique, personal, and full of heart. I also value practices that support mental wellbeing and balance; for me, this includes the grounding ritual of cold-water dipping, where the shock of the water encourages presence, clarity, and calm.

I have been married to my wife, Lorna, for 14 years and am a proud stepfather to a grown-up stepson and stepdaughter who supported me throughout my Celebrant journey. Family time is incredibly important to me, especially moments spent with the light of my life—my 9-year-old grandson. Rarely far from my side is Herbie, our much-loved Cavapoo pup, whose feisty charm and affectionate nature bring daily joy, plenty of laughter, and the occasional muddy pawprint.

Much of my downtime is spent at my second home—my beloved caravan in central Scotland—which acts as both a weekend retreat and my base when travelling across the country to conduct marriages.
Together, we are the Fuze Foundation — and I’m proud to play my part.
About The Fuze Foundation
The Fuze Foundation is a Scottish not-for-profit organisation dedicated to promoting Humanist values, supporting equality and inclusivity, and reducing funeral poverty across Scotland. Through the work of our trained Fuze Celebrants, we provide meaningful, personalised Humanist ceremonies for people from all backgrounds – ensuring that everyone has access to dignity, compassion, and choice at life’s most significant moments.
We offer free and low-cost funeral ceremonies for families experiencing financial hardship, and a portion of every legal Humanist wedding ceremony is donated directly to our charity partners, including organisations such as MND Scotland, Beatson Cancer Charity, CHAS, SAMH, Alzheimer Scotland and more.
Our mission is simple: to make a positive difference to people’s lives through kindness, community, fairness and connection.
Every ceremony delivered, every pound raised, and every act of support helps us continue this work.
