From Greenock to Gleddoch: Elis & Jamie’s Humanist Wedding & Handfasting

It’s not every day you get to stand beside a couple who met in a nightclub and are now tying the knot, literally, with a beautiful Scottish handfasting ritual. But that’s exactly what I had the honour of doing with Jamie and Elis on their wedding day at the stunning Gleddoch Golf & Spa Resort.

As a celebrant with Fuze Ceremonies, it’s always a joy to help couples craft a ceremony that reflects their unique journey, and with Jamie and Elis, that journey has been filled with laughter, adventures, banana loaf mishaps, and a whole lot of love.

From Greenock to Gleddoch

Their story began in Word Up nightclub in Greenock, way back in 2010. Elis was on a leaving night with her friend Laura, who just so happened to know Jamie from school. A simple introduction, a few chance encounters, and a first date to the cinema (Elis’s clever way of dodging awkward conversation!) led to more dates, holidays, new cars, and home renovations.

They’ve explored the world together, with memorable trips to Jersey, Palma, and Lanzarote. But perhaps their biggest adventure came when they moved in together in early 2020, just weeks before lockdown began. It was a time of sourdough experiments, wildlife in the garden, home improvement projects, and strengthening their bond day by day.

Add in the all important proposal on Elis’s 30th birthday, well, this was classic Jamie, thoughtful, funny, and perfectly “them.” With fairy lights, Amazon rings and a heartfelt “Will you marry me?”, the next chapter of their love story began.

A Ceremony Full of Meaning

Set against the rolling autumn backdrop of Gleddoch, their ceremony was heartfelt and full of personality. The most powerful moment? Their handfasting ritual.

Elis chose a piece of her family’s Irvine tartan, while Jamie selected Stewart tartan and as I wrapped the tartans around their joined hands, I tied two knots: One for Elis’s love for Jamie. And One for Jamie’s love for Elis.

These knots symbolised the strength of their commitment and the life they’ve built , and will continue to build, together.

Handfasting is an ancient Celtic ritual, and it was moving to witness such a symbolic and personal gesture. Their “knot” is now a visible symbol connecting them, their families, and their future.

A Glimpse into Forever

So, what does the future hold for Jamie and Elis? They told me this:

Jamie’s looking forward to always having his tea made (good luck with that!), while Elis is relieved to never take the bins out again. But beyond those playful promises lies something much deeper: a continued commitment to laughter, shared adventures, unwavering support, and deep respect.

Their ceremony at Gleddoch was the beginning of their next chapter, surrounded by those who know and love them best. It was emotional, joyful, and unmistakably them. And if you add a little lucky wedding horse show, well, their future together is already set for one of the happiest of times.
