Some of life’s most important moments bring us together in joy. Others bring us together because we need one another more than ever.
A wedding. A farewell. The arrival of a child. A moment to remember someone we love.
At The Fuze Foundation, we believe these moments deserve care, kindness and a ceremony that reflects the people at their heart. We also believe that when people come together, the good they do can reach far beyond the room.
That belief shapes who we are, why we exist and how we support communities across Scotland.
And it began with a very personal story.
Where it all began
In 2009, our founder, Anne Widdop, helped lead her mum’s funeral alongside a Church of Scotland minister.
Her mum had left a note expressing her love for her children and sharing the hymns she wanted them to sing. Anne wanted the farewell to honour those wishes while making space for her mum’s personality and life story.
Having already experienced the loss of her sister, brother and father, Anne knew how much that mattered.
Although Anne was an atheist, working alongside the minister felt entirely natural. They were there to honour someone she loved. Respecting her mum’s faith was part of that.
That experience helped inspire the creation of The Fuze Foundation in 2012, with compassion, choice and respect at its heart.
Humanist values, lived through our actions
The Fuze Foundation is a not-for-profit Humanist organisation.
For us, Humanism means recognising the value of every person and the responsibility we share to care for one another. It means approaching life with compassion, treating people fairly and making thoughtful choices about the difference we can make.
Those values are present in a celebrant taking time to listen. In a ceremony where a family feels understood. In practical help offered when someone is struggling.
They also mean respecting that the people gathered at a ceremony may have different backgrounds, beliefs and experiences. We want people to feel welcome, valued and included.
Beside people in joy and in grief
Through our community of Fuze celebrants, we share some of the happiest days of people’s lives. We hear their stories, celebrate their relationships and help them put their hopes for the future into words.
We also sit beside people facing heartbreak.
When someone dies, finding the words can feel impossible. A thoughtful funeral ceremony creates space to remember the whole person: their character, their relationships, their quirks and the everyday things that made them who they were.
Financial hardship can make an already difficult time harder. The Foundation can provide free or subsidised celebrant services where appropriate, helping families access a meaningful farewell. We can also support marriage ceremonies for couples facing exceptional hardship.
If you need help, or are supporting someone who does, you are welcome to contact us for a confidential conversation about what may be possible.
What we have achieved together
By September 2026, The Fuze Foundation’s community impact had grown to over £136,000 through donations and support in kind.
We are proud of that figure because of what it represents: care offered, ceremonies supported and funds reaching organisations doing valuable work in our communities.
Our charity partners for 2026/27 are Beatson Cancer Charity and Alzheimer Scotland, supporting people and families living with cancer and dementia.
Alongside this, our Community Impact Grant creates an opportunity to support local charitable work. We know that a relatively small amount of funding can mean a great deal to a community organisation with a clear purpose and people ready to make things happen.
There are many ways to measure success. For us, it includes a family having one less worry, a person feeling heard and a local project receiving the encouragement and resources it needs to take its next step.
The power of coming together
None of this happens through one person alone.
Anne’s experience helped start something that has grown through the commitment of our celebrants, the couples and families who choose Fuze, our supporters and the organisations we work alongside.
Every Fuze wedding helps fund the Foundation’s wider work. A day filled with love and celebration can also help make support available to someone facing a much harder chapter.
Our celebrants contribute their time, care and skills. Supporters join fundraising activities, share our work and help others find us. Charity partners bring knowledge and experience that help that support reach further.
Together, those contributions add up.
You do not have to change everything to make a difference. Sometimes it starts with giving a little time, sharing something useful or asking what someone needs.
Help us keep that kindness growing
If you have chosen Fuze for your ceremony, supported a fundraiser, made a donation or told someone about the Foundation, thank you. You are part of this story.
You can help us continue by sharing our work, getting involved in our fundraising or making a donation. You can also help by letting someone know we are here when they may need support.
The Fuze Foundation began with a daughter wanting her mum’s farewell to reflect the person she loved.
That care for the individual remains at the heart of everything we do: celebrating people in their happiest moments, supporting them through their hardest and bringing communities together to help one another.
