Humanist Weddings in Scotland: Finding Your Registration Office

April 22, 2025by George Mclean

Planning a humanist wedding in Scotland? Once you’ve chosen your Fuze Ceremonies humanist celebrant and begun shaping your unique ceremony, the next important step is ensuring your marriage is legally registered. In Scotland, humanist weddings are fully legal and recognised, but you’ll need to liaise with a local registrar office, where your venue resides, to make it official.

Finding Your Local Registrar Office

To register your humanist wedding, you’ll need to contact the registrar in the area where your ceremony will be held. Most local council websites list contact details for their registration services. If you’re unsure where to start, our humanist celebrants at Fuze Ceremonies will be happy to guide you.

Once applied for, the registrars will issue the Marriage Schedule, which is a legal document required for your ceremony to take place. Without this, the marriage cannot be solemnised, so it’s vital to plan ahead.

How to Register Your Humanist Wedding

The process of registering a humanist marriage is straightforward, but it must be completed correctly and on time. Both parties must submit a Marriage Notice Form (M10) to the registrar in the council area where the ceremony will take place. This must be done no more than three months and no less than 29 days before your wedding date.

The National Records of Scotland provide full guidance and downloadable forms which you can access via the link below. It also includes a handy tool to help find the registrar office you will need for your application:
