A Humanist Love Story that Spans Oceans and Time: Beth and Jason’s Celebration in the Scottish Highlands

As a humanist celebrant, I am privileged to witness love in many forms, but Beth and Jason’s story is one that truly touched my heart. It may seem an odd way to start this tale but let me head straight to the proposal. A recent trip to the UK was well-earned. It was their first overseas journey as a couple, and it gave Jason the chance to see where Beth grew up and meet many of her family and friends for the first time.

It was on their second night in London, under the city lights, that Jason asked the question that led to their Glencoe elopement moment. Beth was surprised but had no doubt about her answer. They celebrated with fine food and wine at a French restaurant and soon found themselves discussing the kind of wedding they wanted. As the wine flowed and excitement grew, they both had the idea of eloping to the Scottish Highlands.

It seemed almost fated. They gave themselves a night to sleep on it, but by morning, they knew this was how they wanted to say “I do.” With the blessings of their families, the plans were set in motion, and a majestic Scottish Highlands trip beckoned.

Back To The Beginning

Their journey began, as many do these days, through the magic of online dating. A beer at Moffat Beach, a stunning sunset, and something undeniable sparked between them. From that very first moment, they both knew this was the beginning of something extraordinary.

Soon after, dinner dates followed, and they quickly became a couple. However, there was one challenge looming over their love story – Jason’s job as a pilot in the Australian outback. It meant long stretches of time apart, but rather than pushing them apart, the distance brought them closer. They savoured every moment they had together, treasuring those short bursts of time as if they were the most precious thing in the world.

Two years of navigating a long-distance relationship reached a turning point. Jason was offered an opportunity to advance his career, but it meant a big move across the country. Beth, always strong and determined, made the courageous decision to leave behind her job as a hairdresser, her family, and friends in Queensland to be with Jason full-time in Western Australia’s Kimberley region. Sometimes, your heart just knows what it wants, and their love was worth the sacrifice.

A Bump In The Road

But as much as we plan and dream, life sometimes throws us challenges that we never see coming. In 2022, Jason and Beth faced an incredibly tough time as Jason battled through a serious health crisis. It was a long and difficult road to recovery, but Beth was steadfast by his side. Together, they returned to Queensland to be surrounded by the support of family and friends, and through it all, their relationship grew stronger.

Challenges like these often test relationships, but with Beth’s unwavering love and Jason’s resilience, their bond only deepened. Jason often says he could never repay Beth for her care and support, but Beth simply sees it as what they would both do for each other in any situation. Their love was tried and tested in ways many couples never experience, but it has only confirmed what they both knew in their hearts—they were meant to be together.

Secret Reasons

One of my favourite moments leading up to their wedding was when I asked them to share three reasons why they love each other. Beth’s reasons for loving Jason made me smile: his strength, loyalty, and stubbornness—qualities that are not only admirable but essential in someone who stands by your side through thick and thin.

Jason, in turn, shared how much he treasures Beth’s warm and caring nature, her beauty inside and out, and her incredible resilience and loyalty.

The Outdoors And Some Fur

Beth and Jason share many joys in life. They both have a love for the ocean, feeling most at peace by the water. They enjoy camping out in their trailer, exploring nature, and, of course, they adore their two fur babies, Millie and Winston, who accompany them on many adventures across Australia’s coastlines.

Family plays a huge role in their happiness, and being around their parents, siblings, and extended family is where they feel most content.

The Final Act

A ‘wee dram’ from the Quaich warmed Beth and Jason up as they stood surrounded by the beauty of nature—the heather, hills, and mountains. In that single moment, I was reminded of a line from one of their favourite songs, *Lady May* by Tyler Childers:

“Now the mountains all are blushin’

And they don’t know what to say

‘Cept a good long line of praises

For my lovely Lady May”

It was the perfect sentiment for this perfect day. Beth and Jason’s love is one that has weathered storms, crossed continents, and stood the test of time. In Glencoe’s breathtaking care, they began the next chapter of their beautiful story and I was both privileged and proud to have been the humanist celebrant chosen to help make their affirmation of vows, non-legal celebration of marriage ceremony possible. (Note: Jason & Beth took care of their marriage legalities back home in Australia).

Congratulations, Beth and Jason! Here’s to a lifetime of shared sunsets, ocean breezes, and endless adventures together.
