Why Does it Always Rain on Me?
Well, as our iconic Scottish band Travis sang in their 1999 hit, it always mostly does – especially in Scotland.
And let’s face it, that’s the main point of this blog – rain on your wedding day. Even if Fran Healy’s lyrics take us in a more philosophical direction! Or maybe you’re thinking of Alanis Morissette’s classic – “It’s like raaaayeeeainnnn on your wedding day.” 🎶 Isn’t it ironic?
And if you’re like me and know these songs, you’ll be singing them in your head as you read this! Anyway, I digress…
I had the absolute joy of conducting a humanist wedding ceremony recently for the most beautiful couple. And as a side note, it truly is an incredible honour for a Fuze Ceremonies celebrant to help two people mark such a powerful and personal moment.
But, in classic Scottish style and thanks to our famously unpredictable (or actually, very predictable!) Scottish weather, the skies opened, and the rain poured down in buckets. It felt like someone had burst a pipe in the sky! Not exactly the forecast you dream of for your wedding day.
But here’s the thing, this is where rain becomes something quite magical… especially when it happens during your humanist wedding ceremony.
A Good luck sign
Rain on your wedding day is actually very good luck! Because it signifies that your marriage will last. Us Celebrants are really big on symbolism and symbolic gestures and what’s more symbolic than nature giving you a message – that your marriage will be strong and successful.
I have to prefix this with also saying that just because it doesn’t rain on your wedding day, it doesn’t mean that your legal humanist marriage won’t be successful, of course it will! The root to every successful marriage is a strong partnership, one based on love and commitment. Rain, hail, or shine!
But I do love the romanticism contained within the symbolism of rain on your wedding day.
strength of a wet knot
As you may know (and if you didn’t, you certainly do now!), a knot that becomes wet is incredibly difficult to untie. That’s why, when you marry or ‘tie the knot’ on a rainy day, it’s said your bond will be just as strong and unbreakable.
If you’re choosing to include a traditional Scottish handfasting ceremony, or if you’ve seen one before, you’ll recognise the powerful symbolism. This romantic idea goes back to the 1700s, when couples literally tied the knot during their ceremony – often outdoors, exposed to the elements. And when the knot got wet, it became even more secure.
So, you see, rain, on your wedding day, really can be the most beautiful thing! (Just make sure you bring an umbrella!)
