What is a Quaich?
The Quaich (pronounced “quake” or “quayk”) is a traditional Scottish drinking vessel often used in humanist wedding ceremonies as a symbolic gesture. Sharing a drink from the quaich symbolises love, trust, and friendship and can be made from different materials such as silver, wood, horn or pewter and has two handles, representing the union of two individuals.
The Symbolism & History
The sharing of the quaich is a traditional Scottish wedding ceremony symbolic gesture that dates back to the 16th century. It is a symbol of trust, loyalty, and friendship between the couple, and it also represents the joining of two families together.
The ceremony of sharing the quaich is a beautiful and meaningful way to incorporate Scottish heritage into a humanist wedding celebration. It is a powerful symbol of unity and love, and it is a gesture that will be remembered by all who attend the wedding.
Back in the 16th century, it was used as a communal drinking vessel during social gatherings. The two handles allowed the cup to be passed around a circle of friends without spilling its contents and is often given as a token of friendship or as a sign of respect.

In Scottish tradition, the Quaich also represents the coming together of two families or clans in unity and friendship. When filled with whisky, each person takes turns drinking from the Quaich, symbolising the sharing of life’s joys and sorrows, and the strengthening of bonds between loved ones. Of course it’s not always a wee dram that’s shared as modern couples have been known to fill the quaich with whatever their heart desires. Gin & Tonic, Prosecco, a cocktail, a coke and even plain old water have been used.
Our Personal Connection
The Scottish quaich is still a popular symbol of friendship and love today, and it is often engraved with personal messages or family crests. It is also a popular item for collectors, with antique versions selling for high prices at auction. Whether as a gift or a collectible, the Scottish quaich is a cherished symbol of Scottish culture and tradition.
Having your quaich engraved with your names and wedding date is also a special thing to do, you can also toast to your marriage by sharing your favourite tipple on each of your wedding anniversaries!
