In this month’s ‘Faces of The Foundation’ , we’re getting to know the person behind Aberdeen based Humanist celebrant Katy Smith.
I had a rather unique beginning, having been born in New York. However, I moved to Scotland when I was four years old, so unfortunately I never picked up the lovely Big Apple accent!
My working life began at Halfords as a sales assistant before I went on to study Italian and French at Langside College and later the University of Glasgow, with a little German thrown in for good measure. I’ve always been fascinated by languages, cultures and meeting people from different backgrounds, and that curiosity has stayed with me throughout my life.
Family First

My biggest love, though, is my wonderful family.
I’m mum to my daughter Fiona and Robbie – my 6’2″ baby boy, so to speak!
I’m also a very proud “Nonna” to my grandson Hemen, who is now 8 years old, and my beautiful granddaughter Hanna, who recently celebrated her first birthday.
One of the things I love most is the multicultural aspect of our family. Hemen’s dad is Kurdish, and I’ve loved seeing Hemen experience and embrace both sides of his heritage, including trips to Kurdistan to visit his other grandparents.
A Career Supporting Others
After graduating from university, I moved into teaching languages. Over time, however, I found myself drawn towards supporting children who needed additional help and understanding.
Throughout my career, I’ve worked hard to identify the real barriers to learning by building positive relationships and taking the time to understand each individual child.
That ability to connect with people, listen carefully and navigate challenging situations is something I hope to bring to my role as a celebrant.
Currently, I work in a school supporting children with behavioural difficulties, so it’s fair to say there isn’t much that could shock or offend me!
Since joining Fuze, I’ve received fantastic support and encouragement, and I firmly believe that every member of the team brings their own unique strengths and experiences.
Hills, Running & Determination

Outside of work, you’ll usually find me somewhere in the hills.
I’ve completed a number of ultra-marathons over the years, including the infamous Devil o’ the Highlands – a 42-mile challenge along the West Highland Way. Before anyone gets the wrong idea, though, ultra-running isn’t about being fast. It’s really just a very long day out involving a lot of jogging, eating, drinking and an unhealthy amount of determination!
Before discovering running, I spent many years practising karate and loved the fitness, discipline and confidence it brought.
Truth be told, though, I still couldn’t fight my way out of a paper bag!
Looking Ahead
I’m really excited to now offer legal wedding ceremonies across Scotland on behalf of The Fuze Foundation. The quirkier or more remote the location, the better!
I’m incredibly proud to be part of such a supportive team and look forward to continuing to learn from colleagues, meet amazing couples and help create ceremonies that are as unique as the people at their heart.
I’m so happy to have joined Fuze and can’t wait to see where the journey takes me next.
