Humanist Marriage Ceremony: St Andrews in the Square, Glasgow

September 16, 2014by Fuze Admin0

On the 24th of May this year, as Glasgow geared up for Radio One’s Big Weekend at Glasgow Green, a lovely young couple by the name of Craig and Mo were filled with anticipation and excitement. But it wasn’t the thought of watching Coldplay or One Direction perform that was filling them with excitement; it was the knowledge that they were to be married at St Andrew’s in the Square, that very afternoon.

I arrived at the magnificent venue, as the welly clad crowds were descending on Glasgow Green, to find the stunning 18th Century restored church looking as splendid as ever. The main gallery provides an amazing auditorium for a ceremony, with plenty of natural light and its beautiful solid oak floors are ideal when the dancing begins!

Our groom was a little nervous, as most grooms are, but looked ever so dapper in his morning suit and top hat. And the beautiful table decorations, hand made by the bride herself, added a gorgeous personal touch to the room. (The bride also made the bouquets from buttons and trinkets, which were truly stunning). And when a slightly nervous Mo and her bridesmaids arrived, it was a joy to see how excited they all were, and of course, how beautiful they all looked.

The ceremony itself was a simple, but highly personal affair, and after the initial welcome, the happy couple took part in a candle lighting ceremony, which was followed by an ancient apache blessing, read out by a close friend.

Mo and Craig then exchanged some simple yet personal vows, before proceeding to the formal part of the ceremony and legal vows. And to complete the ceremony, the newlyweds took a sip each from the Quaich, to symbolise their commitment to share all that their future may bring.

I finished the ceremony with a light hearted reading before the happy couple made their way outside, followed by their guests, for a group photograph.

And so another meaningful ceremony was complete. Mo and Craig looked over the moon to be newly married, and their handsome young son loved the attention he was getting, as he looked just as dashing as his Dad in his wee suit!

I’m sure that a good time was had by all as the celebrations got into full swing and I know that the staff at St Andrew’s in the Square would have taken great care of the happy couple and their guests, and it was a joy to work with the team on the day. They are a genuinely friendly and professional bunch and I hope to have the pleasure of conducting another ceremony there in the future.

Congratulations again to Mr and Mrs Mooney!
