At Fuze Ceremonies and The Fuze Foundation, we are constantly inspired by the ways our celebrants live out the values of humanism every day, both in and out of ceremony spaces. One shining example of this is Jane Alexander, a dedicated humanist celebrant and volunteer with Dumfries and Galloway Blood Bikes (DGBB), a remarkable charity whose motto of: โItโs what we do!” perfectly captures Janeโs selfless spirit.
Following her retirement as a Primary Headteacher, Jane embarked on a new career as a Humanist Celebrant, gaining a SQA Diploma from The UK Celebrant & Public Speaking Academy and then joined Fuze Ceremonies. Jane’s experience in supporting and nurturing families through times of change, coupled with her creative flair and attention to detail, enable her to deliver bespoke, inclusive and uplifting ceremonies, weaving together stories and memories in a way that will truly inspire you.

Answering the Call to Give Back
Jane began volunteering with DGBB in early 2022, driven by a deep desire to give back after the COVID-19 pandemic. After seeing a callout for volunteer drivers and riders on social media, Jane took the initiative to complete an advanced driving course and officially joined the charity shortly thereafter.
โAfter COVID, I wanted to give something back to the NHS,โ Jane explains. โDGBB provides a 24/7/365 service transporting emergency blood, samples, medication and urgent medical equipment between healthcare centres and hospitals across our region and across the country.โ
DGBB is entirely volunteer led, with over 150 members, from dispatch controllers and riders to mechanics and fundraisers. The team ensures that critical medical materials reach patients quickly and safely, all without charging the NHS a single penny.

Driven by Humanist Values
Janeโs volunteerism is a clear expression of her humanist values of compassion, community, and a commitment to making a difference. These same values are at the heart of her work as a humanist wedding celebrant with Fuze Ceremonies, where she helps couples shape deeply personal, meaningful ceremonies that reflect who they are.
Whether sheโs crafting a bespoke wedding script or transporting life-saving blood samples through rural Scotland, Janeโs care for others and belief in collective action shines through.
โThe best part of the job is knowing that you are a small cog in a big wheel and your team is giving up their time to help make a difference.โ
In true humanist fashion, Jane believes in people helping people, and that we all have a role to play in creating a better world. Itโs this ethos that also drives The Fuze Foundation where we support causes that align with our belief in compassion, community, and celebration of life.
Sharing Skills and Empowering Others
Janeโs passion for driving hasnโt stopped at volunteering with DGBB. She has gone a step further by becoming a volunteer National Observer with the Institute of Advanced Motorists, helping others reach the standards required to join Blood Bikes.
Her role as a mentor not only contributes to the growth of the charity but also ensures that more people can step up and give back, proving that humanist values are about more than just words; theyโre about action.
A Heartfelt Thank You Jane
โJane Alexander has been an outstanding volunteer and a vital part of the Dumfries and Galloway Blood Bikes team since joining in 2021. Her dedication as a Controller, Driver, Trustee, and Membership Manager has had a direct impact on the lives of patients across the region. Jane brings compassion, professionalism, and unwavering commitment to everything she does, and we are proud to work alongside her.
